Travelling around Australia in a motorhome. A story of our travels starting from NSW then through Queensland, across to Northern Territory and Western Australia, then to South Australia, Victoria and finally across the seas to Tasmania. We have enjoyed everywhere we have visited and look forward to setting off again in our motorhome.

Tully Sugar Mill 1 August 2015

We went into Tully to have a tour of the Sugar Mill.
Sugar is the largest employer of labour during the harvesting season and there are many back-packers around working in the sugar and banana plantations. The Mill tour was very interesting and although very noisy and dusty, we were well looked after by our tour guide, Julie.
The whole process has been automated and computerised, so farmers can see how much sugar content their cane has and every effort is made to minimise the environmental impact of the refinery process. It is a complicated process with many stages that continually clean the cane and extract as much sugar as possible.
