On the Road to St George 4 September 2015
Had another look around Roma in the morning. Although it is the same size as Longreach, the combination of some good rain for the cattle and gas/oil drilling means that the town has withstood the drought better than most. Roma has many fine buildings and a most intriguing shop; it is meant to be a draper shop, but in truth it was one of those old fashioned places that every large town used to have. It was piled as high as the ceiling with all manner of conceivable goods, as well as hundreds of bolts of material and haberdashery items – you could spends hours just going through everything – we wouldn’t have liked to do a stock take. In the afternoon we drove down to Surat and then camped near St George. With a pitch black sky, the stars were spectacular.
